Car Shortage Sees Imports Flood Market

A chronic shortage of second hand cars in the Irish market has lead to a massive influx of imported cars by savvy car dealers hoping to plug the gap in their forecourts.

Merlin Car Auctions noticed the shortfall of second hand beginning 12 months ago and began negotiations with international markets. The resultant Japanese auction was introduced in February, with the next No Reserve import auction taking place on April 10th.

Demand has never been greater, and this April import auction will feature over 100 Japanese cars, many unique to Asia. Focusing on affordable small cars, models in the sale include the Mazda Demio, Nissan March, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Note and Suzuki Swift.

David Byrne, Managing Director of Merlin Car Auctions, feels that imported cars play an important role in supporting the Irish market. "It is not a surprise to anyone to hear that the second hand car market has been in decline for the past two years, ultimately resulting in the current shortage of vehicles for sale. Luckily, our Car Auction has bucked that trend, but we still have the issue of making sure we have fresh stock for our four weekly auctions. This Japanese Import sale is a great way to boost the market and offers great choice and a new style of car for customers looking for a deal".
